Understanding of ecology in other fields

From a biological standpoint ecology studies the relations between living organisms and their environment, or between different types of species in relation to their environment. It can be studied at the individual, population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere levels.

Some other types of ecology include:

• Behavioural ecology studies organisms' behaviour in their environment, how they might be related, and what role they played in evolution.
• Cognitive ecology investigates what impact does an organism's environment has on it's cognitive system, how it's behaviour is limited by the cognitive system. A history of the field can be found here.
• Socioecology looks into how environment affects social structure and organization of living organisms.
• Human ecology focuses primarily on human interrelationships and interaction with their social, political and economic environment.
